Haya ni Baadhi yaliniliyozungumzia Kwenye Top 30 ya Jumapili ya 7 Nov

1. Honeybees can be used to detect explosives.

Everyone has heard of dogs on a bomb squad, but un-bee-knownst to most people, honeybees have just as keen a sense of smell. After all, bees are able to track the faint scent of pollen on the wind all the way to a flower! These tiny sniffers are trained in bomb detection by being exposed to the odors of common explosive ingredients. Whenever they flick their proboscises (mouth parts) correctly, they are rewarded with sugar water!

For the real deal, the bees are strapped to small tubes inside a box. They are then placed inside the area in question, and a video camera equipped with pattern recognition software detects any proboscis motion.

2. In Spain Prostitutes  have to wear reflective vests (like highway workers) to reduce traffic accidents.

Police claim the prostitutes are violating traffic laws and are posing a danger to drivers. If they are caught walking on the highway or on the shoulder without a fluorescent vest on, they will have to pay a 40 euro fine.

3. In 1974, a British health nut drank himself to death with carrot juice.
The man, Basil Brown, guzzled 10 gallons of carrot juice in a span of 10 days! This gave him 10,000 times the recommended amount of vitamin A and ultimately led to his untimely death from severe liver damage.

4. In its first year of operations, Microsoft made $16,005 in revenue.

This took place in 1975, and even more amazingly, all the money came from a single BASIC program the company wrote for the MITS Altair 8800 computer. Bill Gates and Co. have definitely come a long way since then – in 2008 Microsoft hauled in $60,420,000,000!

5. A baby girl was born on 8/9/10 at 11:12 PM.
Ella Rose Riehle was born in Cincinnati, Ohio at this improbable moment. Tragically, she did not quite weigh 6 pounds, 7 ounces, or this fact would be even more amazing!

6. “I Got A Feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas is the best-selling digital song of all time.
The Peas also occupy the #4 slot with their song “Boom Boom Pow.” Lady Gaga also holds two of the top five spots with “Just Dance” at #3 and “Poker Face” coming in at #5 all-time.

7. Eight is considered to be the luckiest number in China. The '08 Olympics were in China.
In China, the number 8 is basically equivalent to the number 7 here in the West. The Chinese often take this even further, having been known to seek out house and phone numbers containing the number 8! This superstition is so widely held that the opening ceremonies for the Beijing Olympics began on 8/8/08 at 8:00 pm!

8. 12% of people dream in black and white.
According to a study published in 2008, people under the age of 25 reported rarely ever dreaming in black and white, while those over 55 claimed to dream in monochrome about a quarter of the time. This is largely attributable to the shift from black and white television to full color back in the 1940s!

9. The war that killed the most Americans was the Civil War.
Although more Americans died from battle during World War II, over 200,000 more total troops perished during the Civil War (including those that died as a result of disease, accidents, etc.) Also worthy of mention is that the casualties on both sides of the Civil War were Americans. WWII, on the other hand, claimed the lives of tens of millions of people all over the world.

10. Lady Gaga’s hit single “Telephone” was originally written for Britney Spears.
Britney recorded a demo of it, but declined to release it.

11. Having sex can reduce a fever because of the sweat produced.

Sex is also a pain reliever, ten times more effective than Valium: immediately before orgasm, levels of the hormone oxytocin rise by five times, determining a huge release of endorphins. These chemicals calm pain, from a minor headache to arthritis or migraines, and with no secondary effects. Migraines also disappear because the pressure in the brain's blood vessels is lowered while we have sex. So now we see that actually, a woman's headache is rather a good reason for having sex, not against it.

.

12. Pieces of bread were used to erase pencil marks before the rubber eraser was invented.

13. The human brain uses approximately as much energy as a 20 watt light bulb. (The human brain uses approximately as much energy as a 20 watt light bulb.)

However, scientists estimate that in order to replicate the abilities of the human brain a processor would need at least 10 megawatts to operate. That's the amount of energy produced by a small hydroelectric plant!

14. A light bulb produced in 1901 still glows to this day.
This amazing bulb has burned for nearly ONE MILLION hours (with a few short breaks). General Electric, Ripley’s Believe It or Not, and the Guinness Book of World Records all agree that it is the longest-living light bulb in history! It can now be found at a fire station in Livermore, California (with an added surge protector and backup battery sources!).

15. The letters ‘j’ and ‘k’ do not appear in the English spelling of any cardinal number.

16. More people die annually because of smoking than from AIDS.
Each year, 5 million deaths are caused by smoking, compared to 2 million from AIDS or HIV.

Smoking is actually now the leading cause of death worldwide! It is actually an increasing problem in many countries in the world that haven't taken any steps to curb tobacco use.

17. If you live in the Japanese city of Isesaki, you must shave your beard in order to get a public service job.
This applies to stubble, full beards, goatees, or any other kind of facial hair. Apparently , some citizens find beards unpleasant, so the authorities decided to ban beards for public servants. The ban came along with new rules that lets male employees work without having to wear jackets and ties, so I guess it was kind of a mixed bag.

18. The British drink around 165,000,000 cups of tea daily.
That adds up to a whopping 60.2 billion cups each year! Their daily coffee intake largely pales in comparison – a measly 70 million cups. Brits also are not fans of loose-leaf tea – 96% of their tea is brewed using tea bags!

19. The best time to buy a pair of shoes is in the afternoon.
This is because your feet swell from all the walking you do as the day goes by!
