Though they are known for crying quite frequently, newborns are actually incapable of producing proper tears! This is because their tear ducts have not fully developed, even after they are born. At this point, babies can only muster up what is called basal tearing - enough fluid to keep their eyes moist and healthy. This period of ‘crocodile tears’ will end 3 to 12 weeks after birth, when the child’s tear ducts have formed completely.
In addition to this lack of lachrymal glands, newborns do not yet have functioning salivary glands. This is not a big deal because babies have a liquid diet until they are old enough to grow some teeth. Sometime during their first three months these glands will begin working, but the baby has not yet learned to swallow its spit. This is the reason most young babies tend to drool!
