In 2007, Venezuela created its own time zone.

This new time zone set clocks across the country back half an hour! The reason for the change, according to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, is so more citizens will wake up earlier and the productivity of the nation as a whole will improve. However, it is much more likely that Chavez merely wanted Venezuela to be in a different time zone than the United States.
