That country was Mauritania, a medium-sized nation located in western Africa. This does not mean that slavery does not still exist in modern times unfortunately, but for the past 30 years it has been considered a criminal offense in every country worldwide. Today, slaves are more numerous than at any other time in history, but thankfully they also make up a smaller proportion of the human race than ever before. This is because modern slavery is more cost-effective than ever before. However, no contemporary industries rely on slavery as heavily as the plantations did back in the time of the African slave trade throughout the Atlantic Ocean.
